Self Assessment

Are you addicted to drugs or alcohol?

How do you know when your social use of alcohol has become problematic? Is your use of physician-prescribed medication becoming an addiction? Sometimes it can be difficult to determine when seemingly harmless or safe use slides into the realm of substance abuse and addiction. Even when substance use may seem justified or a regular part of everyday life, it can still have a detrimental impact on your health and your quality of life.

This self-assessment test can be used to help you determine if you may be suffering from substance abuse or addiction. The questions in this self-assessment are based on the criteria defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Substance Use Disorders (DSM-5) for substance use disorder, which are used by psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals to standardize diagnosis.

You will answer 11 yes/no questions that correspond to each of the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder. The responses on this test are confidential and exclusively for your own personal knowledge, so be sure to answer each question honestly.

Disclaimer: This self-assessment cannot replace professional assessment and should not alone be used to diagnose substance use disorder. Clinical diagnosis can only come from a medical professional. However, the results of the test may help you decide whether to seek diagnosis and treatment from an addiction specialist.
